Kylian Mbappe struck twice in four second-half minutes as France dismantled Sweden 3-0 to book a quarter-final place at the 2026 World Cup, extending his tournament-leading tally to six goals.
The holders had been frustrated for nearly an hour in Dallas, with Sweden goalkeeper Viktor Johansson producing three outstanding saves before the break. The pressure finally told on 58 minutes, when Ousmane Dembele cut inside from the right and slipped a reverse pass into the area for Mbappe to sweep home.
Four minutes later the captain doubled the lead, racing onto a long ball from Aurelien Tchouameni and lifting a delicate finish over the advancing Johansson. Substitute Bradley Barcola added a third in stoppage time to complete a scoreline that reflected France’s control.
“We knew patience would decide this game,” France coach Didier Deschamps said afterwards. “Kylian delivered the moments, but the structure behind him made those moments possible.”
The result sets up a quarter-final meeting with the winner of Paraguay and France’s old rivals from South America. Sweden exit with credit after topping expectations in the group stage, but the gap in attacking quality proved decisive.
Mbappe now leads the World Cup scoring chart on six, level with Lionel Messi, with Erling Haaland and Harry Kane one behind on five. With the bracket opening up, France look increasingly like the team to beat.
